Professor D. N. Dhanagare (11 June 1936 – 7 March 2017) specialised in the study of farmers' movements and in rural sociology. Over his career, Professor Dhanagare was President of the Indian Sociological Society and a member of the International Sociological Association. He was also a member of the People’s Union of Civil Liberties, the Indian Association of Social Sciences and was Member-Secretary of the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi.

Professor Dhanagare was Vice Chancellor of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, and taught at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He was a National Fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla from 2012 to 2014.

In 2011 he received the Indian Sociological Society Life Time Achievement Award.
