The People’s Linguistic Survey of India provides an overview of the extant and dying languages of India. It is the culmination of a nationwide survey of languages that has been documented by linguists, writers, social activists, and members of different speech communities. . Critically, it encapsulates the world view of the speakers of the languages.

Mizoram ki Bhashayen (Volume 20, Part 1) discusses and documents the languages spoken in Mizoram.  along with their varieties. The main objective of this volume is to bring all the extant languages of Mizoram into focus and attempt to preserve them in their authenticity. The book is divided into four parts: I. Mizo and other Important Languages, II. Endangered Languages, III. Languages of the Neighbouring States, IV. Languages of Neighbouring Myanmar.

The Chief Editor

Ganesh Devy is the chief editor of the PLSI series. He taught at the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, till 1996 before leaving to set up the Bhasha Research Centre in Baroda and the Adivasi Academy at Tejgadh, where he worked towards conserving and promoting the languages and culture of indigenous and nomadic communities. Apart from being awarded the Padma Shri (2014), he has received many awards for his work in literature and language conservation.

The Volume Editor

Lalnunthangi Chhangteis a linguist, specialising in the Tibeto-Burman languages of Northeast India. She has published several articles and contributed to books on the Mizo language, both in English and Mizo. She is engaged in documenting the extant and endangered languages of the region and also helps in publishing dictionaries, readers, primers and other literature. She is a life member of INTACH, Mizoram chapter.

The Translators

Madhvendra Prasad Pandey is Professor, Department of Hindi, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shilong. His areas of interest are literature of Northeast India, languages, oral literature, Indian poetry and Western criticism. He has more than 30 years of experience in teaching.

Shruti Pandey is Associate Professor and Head, Department of the Hindi, Shillong College, Shillong. She has participated in various seminars, talks and television shows.
